I challenge George Guynn, Jr. to put up facts to his assertions, which, I must say, seem rather baseless and spurious at best. A number of us who have backed Measure Q either hail from military families and/or are veterans ourselves. Does Mr. Guynn REALLY think we would besmirch the good name of our men and women in uniform? I think not!

What is more likely, I suspect, is that Mr. Guynn and his comrades simply don't like the idea of taxpayers contributing to public education. Well, Mr. Guynn, I've got some news for you, Sir: if the taxpayers DON'T start 'ponying up', California is going to take a nose-dive off of the 47th State-in-the-Union-in-per-capita-funding-of-public-education, and plummet into the abyssmal depths of economic despair and death of American Dreams.

No one here is asking anyone to fund another war. What we're asking simply is to contribute to Californians' educational prospects. Is that really so unreasonable?

Respectfully,

Dave Brannen
Candidate, Area 5 Trustee
SCCD Governing Board

I believe Journalism, Drafting, Engineering, etc. are core classes that community colleges were built on. These subjects have defined classes that any student(s) can study and excel in and make into a successful career.

If you took these classes away, what you would have left would be just basic classes used to fulfill the requirements to and for bigger schools. Basically, a cheaper way to babysit the under-achievers.

I believe in addition to the classes being kept, these fundamental courses that can be achieved through a two-year program should be kept at SCC.

It seems to me that your cartoonist has a truckload of anger issues, aimed predominately at anyone who disagrees with him. I agree with the ASSC that the comic strip depicting African American women as bitter, complaining shrews while THEY depicted African American men as deadbeat, trifling losers was wholly inappropriate for a community college paper . . . for ANY paper, for that matter. I am of the opinion that comics serve two purposes, either singly or dually: To provoke thought concerning social, familial or political issues and/or to incite laughter. I haven't seen a single strip drawn by Phil Temple that does any of these things. Although he is a marginally talented artist, he is obviously a very poor writer. Perhaps he should find someone with some brilliant views on social, political and familial life and draw their vision, because his "visions" just doesn't do it for me.

The image of a raggedy, disheveled, smelly young person wearing what looks like a chain salvaged from a slave ship is very ugly; not entertaining at all.

Note to Mitchel:

I appreciate your sentiment. However, LGBT citizens are not asking heterosexuals to 'allow' us to do anything.

Heterosexuals do not hold within them the power to do such a thing.

Fundamental rights belong to THE INDIVIDUAL, not any group.

We are not asking for your 'permission,' as your permission is not needed.

We are DEMANDING from our government the rights that EVERY citizen is guaranteed under our Constitution.

These rights can ONLY be denied by force. They are not granted, bestowed, or voted on. They belong to each individual citizen.

You would do well to keep that in mind in future writing projects.
