Delbert Bump, a professor of music at Solano College, was the first to admit how he felt.

"It takes humility to come here and ask you for money," Bump said.

These words opened Bump's presentation to the Associated Students of Solano College.

The ASSC heard non-club funding requests October 24, and their vote to fund the requests presented to them-in full, in part, or not at all- were finalized October 30.

Bump's request for $3500 was just one considered by the ASSC.

Political science instructor Sanford Wright asked for $1500 for the ethnic studies program, as he is the program's coordinator. Wright hoped to continue offering speakers that benefit the campus community.

Wright characterized the program as the "best presentation series of its kind in the U.S."

SCC psychology instructor Karen McCord spoke for herself and on behalf of SCC Counselor Ella Toliver and SCC English Instructor Alena Hairston, in asking for $8000 for anti-violence programs.

These programs would feature three speakers who would appear on campus, said McCord. One of the speakers McCord proposed was television personality Glenda A. Hatchett, better known as Judge Hatchett.

McCord said violence is "impacting the ability of students to function in class."

Music instructor Bump asked for $3500 to fund appearances by nationally prominent musicians, some of whom have played with jazz luminaries such as Herbie Hancock.

SCC Film Instructor Maile Ornellas, recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, requested $3166 for audio/video equipment for Hue University in Vietnam, where she will be teaching in the spring of 2007.

Ornellas characterized her request as a "gift from us to them," and stressed that the average income in Vietnam is $75-80 per month.

Noel Robinson, student health center nurse, requested $1647 for sexually transmitted disease tests-including HIV, Chlamydia, and gonorrhea-as well as tuberculosis tests, health education, and condoms.
