The Solano College Speech Team placed third in a statewide competition which drew entries from 44 schools, including the University of Southern California.
Jessica Debolt and Kendra Jackson won first place for individual competition in the categories of informative speaking and prose.
Jackson's win was sweetened by the fact that her mother and sister attended the event.
"I did a little strut," Jackson said of her walk to accept her award and "it was really good to have them there."
For Jackson, the best part of winning is the "pride of my teammates and knowing you did your best."
Debolt finds that the competition of the speech team mimics her high school sports history and the discipline "helped in my other classes."
Other team members are hopeful that the speech team will benefit them in the future as well.
Team member Josh Normand, 15, wants to attend medical school and hopes the "awards will help with the application process."
Team members acknowledge the role their coaches - Ana Petero, Neil Glines, and Greg Poff - play in their success.
"[The result] speaks to how good the coaches are," said team member Paul Starbuck.
