Number one versus number two is right around the corner, with the women's Contra Costa College basketball team coming to Solano Community College to play the second place Lady Falcons.
This is the biggest game of the year for both teams because it will most likely determine who will win the Bay Valley Conference title, but also because of the rivalry that has developed between these teams.
"Over the years there have been many good games between us, even before I arrived [at Solano]" said Solano head coach, Matt Borchert. "We see them as the door to the title and I think they see us as the same".
Solano has a record of 5-1, while Contra Costa also has a record of 5-1. Contra Costa is in first place in the standings because they won in the first match up against Solano. Since Contra Costa is winning the tie breaker, it makes the upcoming game that much more important for the Lady Falcons.
"If we want to win the title, we can't do so with two losses." said Coach Borchert. "We have to beat them. We have no choice."
The loss was hard on the players as well.
"It's so much more important to win after that loss. It was like losing the Super Bowl." said sophomore guard, Tamieka Durant.
The upcoming game will be the defining moment for the Lady Falcon's season. Durant knows the magnitude of the game. She described it as, "Duke vs. North Carolina, Tennessee vs. Connecticut, Lakers vs. Heat. Everyone has to be there."
With a game of such a high caliber coming up, the pressure will surely mount.
"I didn't perform well last time we played [Contra Costa], and its my assignment to guard their best player, so that definitely adds to the pressure." Durant said.
The highly anticipated rivalry game is set to take place on Friday, Feb. 2nd at 5:30 pm. Make sure you come out and support your Lady Falcons.
