A recent report on Solano Community College's academic functioning made by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, stated SCC needs to make many improvements regarding dialogue amongst and between staff, faculty, administration and students.

Recognizing the concerns and acknowledging the need for immediate action, SCC created a steering committee headed by Marjorie Carson designed to specifically deal with issues stemming from the commission report. The report may also explain why SCC has made an extended effort to include student opinions in the many expected changes that are going to take place over the next few years.

In order to address the issue SCC has created several forums. The most recent Forum, "Basic Skills" took place February 28, and encouraged students and faculty to voice their opinions and concerns in regards to the best way to help students obtain the basic skills needed to succeed.

Although most of the voices heard were from SCC faculty, most thoughts expressed by students seemed to evolve around the idea of simply having the physical resources to obtain the basic skills being provided.

Having had to deal with required lab hours, Martin Bullock voiced his concerns, "We could use longer MAC lab hours so that we can get more study time in. At least have it so that the library and the lab stay open till the same time," he said.

"If you have questions, there is no one to ask," says Brandi Lucas SCC student in regards to trying to get any information.

Agreeing with Lucas student trustee Lillian Nelson adds, "Not only that, but the people in there just sit around and they don't get up to help you at all. Students are forced to raise their hand in front of all those people"

Nancy Konecny SCC learning specialist has heard the same students complaints and adds, "Some students are too embarrassed to admit that they don't know and so they don't get the help they need," she said
