Video games based on movies are a constant theme. For example: TMNT, 300 and Peter Jackson's King Kong just to name a few.
The one thing that these games have in common is that they are terrible games of good movies. They either are too simplistic, too short or just plain horrible looking.
Spider-Man 3 is the most recent movie to try to make the jump to gaming consoles.
The latest Spidey film has been of the most anticipated movies of all time, as the record-breaking gross amount of $148 million on opening weekend can attest to. While it is not the greatest movie ever, it is quite good. What I'm trying to say, is that it could have been worse.
The action scenes are incredible and well choreographed. The visuals are crisp and they have Spider-Man looking better then ever while he swings through the streets of New York.
The action scenes are not only the best thing about the movie, but also the worst because there are so few.
The movie is slightly bogged down with drama, and Mary-Jane gets way too much screen time. Peter Parker spends more time trying to fix his relationship with M.J. then fighting the villains.
The villains were great, not just in appearance, but as fully developed characters. Sandman, New Goblin and Venom were intricate pieces of the storyline and all interacted with each other at one point in the film.
Sandman was more of a main character then I anticipated. It showed his creation and involvement in the world of Spider-Man.
New Goblin gives you a familiarity of the old Goblin, but with a younger aura. His mask looks better and all of his equipment is much more 'hip'.
Venom also created a worthy adversary to Spider-Man, with a menacing look and the classic villain attitude.
The one part of the movie that threw me off was the black-suited Spider-Man. Sure he was cool with his costume on, but when not in costume it changed Peter Parkers demeanor. The black suit turned Peter Parker into a pelvic-thrusting, dancing-with-the- stars candidate. It was just bizarre and corny.
The movie might not live up to the hype, but really, what movie could live up to that kind of hype? It is definitely something your going to want to check out.
As for the game, it was a delightful surprise. It goes above all expectations for games that are modeled after a movie. It doesn't lock you into a dumbed-down version of the story in the movie.
