"Gerry Fisher has accepted the position'" she said. "We now have a new leader. Oh and I should add it was a 7 and 0 vote."
Fisher has been interim superintendent-president for the last nine months, after Paulette Perfumo's ousting.
He announced, "Solano College is in at an exciting place in history," over sparkling cider provided by Trustee Tony Ubalde.
Although earlier in the year, Fisher expressed no desire to permanently fill the superintendent-president position, Fisher told reporters on Wednesday he agreed to stay for two reasons.
"They asked me if I would serve through the Vacaville Center and the Measure G bond, and the software conversion," he said. "I talked to my family and they OK'd it," he said.
The rest of the Measure G bond is up for bidding sometime in January '08, and the center will be complete in summer 09, "fall at the latest," said Fisher.
In addition, solano is well into the first eight months into installing Banner, which is a software that allows SCC departments to interlink with all students, staff and faculty.
This is expected to be an 18-month process, and Fisher said the board "wanted continuity" as Banner is a complicated program.
Fisher said he assured the board that he "would stay while they reopened the search again." However, Fisher will only stay to see both projects completed.
"Just two years, till June 2009," he said.
Faculty and staff who attended the meeting whooped and hollerd "Yay Gerry.... He's the best man for the job."
Lorenzo Hays-Phillips, SCC student, expressed his delight with the governing board's decisions, shaking Fisher's hand and adding, "They made a good decision."
Rushing back into the meeting, Fisher said "I'm very committed to the institution."
