If you were here last semester, you may have noticed that the prices have gone up in the cafeteria by 25 to 30 cents per item.
Gina Yoo, owner of the Fresh and Natural cafeteria at Solano Community College, says her food prices have been going up for the past four years. This year alone the price for dairy products has increased 30 percent for items like "cheese and milk," said Yoo.
For instance, the quarter pounder itself didn't go up but the patty melt which has cheese, went up 10 cents to $3.95.
In addition, the grilled cheese has gone up 35 cents and now costs $2.25.
In order to keep the prices as low as possible for students, Yoo has been doing a lot of the foot work herself by "shopping for myself a lot of times to provide kids lower prices and better quality."
Yoo's sales have decreased 15 to 20 percent over the last year. However, Yoo does not attribute the loss to the recent price increase.
She says that since bus prices and tuition have gone up, sales have gone down.
"They say there are more students, but kids don't have the money," she said.
Cameron Mosbarger, English Lit major, agrees with Yoo and says, "it's basic economics. It's supply and demand."
Brad Dingman, SCC student, says he has definitely noticed the price increase and no longer purchases food from the cafeteria.
"It's easier to go get a double cheese burger," he said.
