The Exhibition 60 class designed an eye-catching window display for 'A Day's Work' show.

Students, alumni, and local artists'exhibited"A Day's Work" at Herger Gallery from Sept. 7 to Oct. 2. There were a total of seven artists in the show, including former student Judy Neal of Vacaville, current student Lawrence Buford of Vallejo, plus five artists from around the Bay Area.

Curator Janene Whitesell said, "Most artists that show their work in the gallery are not students, but exhibiting artists from around the Bay Area. The students in the Art 60 class (exhibition design) choose the topics/themes for the exhibitions and I curate the shows. (Meaning, I run around to artists' studios looking for work.)"

Whitesell described the show this way:

"The works for this exhibition were all created in less than a 24-hour period. In some instances, the works were created in less than a typical work day."

"When the artists were contacted, they were asked if they would create a work specifically for this exhibition. Artists were intrigued by the concept of being given "an assignment." Due to busy exhibition schedules, a few artists' submitted works that fit the requirements for our exhibition, but were not created specifically it. Others made a new piece for the show."

"As the labels illustrate, the artists involved have spent many years wrestling with the creative challenges that artwork poses. While a solution may have posed itself within an eight-hour period-or in some cases two or three hours-it may very well be that the solution became clear due to so many years being immersed in art making."

"I would like to thank the artists for agreeing to be part of this show. I also want to commend the Art 60 class (Exhibition Design) for a superb job in the installation of this exhibition."

~Janene Whitesell, Instructor/Curator
