Hippies in trees need to come down

Andrew Johansen

Issue date: 10/10/07 Section: Opinion
Where in the world would you find people living in trees for nearly a year to keep them from getting cut down?

I'll tell you where: Berkeley, California. The college town is renowned for its bums and hippies, and now has a problem with cutting down a few trees.

The University of California is planning on building new training facilities outside of Memorial stadium but there are a number of trees in the way.

When trees are in the way of construction, there is a simple solution: cut them down. I understand the "save the rainforest" movement and what not, but there is a place for the rainforest.

Don't take this as if I don't care about trees and I want to cut down every tree to make a high rise or shopping mall, but there are places for trees and places for buildings. On a prominent college campus near a stadium it makes more sense to have a training facility rather than trees.

I want one person to come up with pros on having those trees there. I can come up with a con that trumps all of the benefits of having those trees; they are in the way of where they want to build the new facility!

Trees can be planted anywhere, but the placement of the facility is crucial to the location of the stadium. It would be simply illogical to build the training facilities apart from the stadium. Why not plant trees apart from the stadium? The only point to be made is that the locations of the facilities are directly related to the stadium, while the location of a tree is related to nothing.

Now all of that is irrelevant because the University cannot get a group of tree huggers out of a tree, which is on the property of the school. I don't know about you, but if I went into my front yard and there were some hippies in my tree, there would be hell to pay.

First the University put a fence around the trees to isolate the protestors, which is understandable, but the tree huggers are still there and it is not looking like they are going anywhere soon. They have been there since December 2006 and the University has been recently denied the right to evict them by a judge.

You have made an excellent point, but I regret that I have to inform you that you are not very smart. Going beyond the fact that you cannot spell dirty, your ying and yang reference is probably the aftermath of an extreme hash consumption. (Continued…)
