It has been said that good things come in large sizes. However, the nine-student staff at Solano Community College's newspaper last semester would beg to differ as they received two general excellence awards at the Northern California Journalism Association of Community Colleges' regional conference on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The 2007 spring staff won the awards for their print and online editions of "The Tempest." The print GE was a first for adviser Mary Mazzacco since her hiring in 2000 and the second online award during her tenure.
"It's really satisfying," said Mazzacco. "It was a small staff last semester. We really did try hard to bring a breadth of coverage to the paper we hadn't had before."
"My overall goal was to bring diversity to the newspaper and we did it," she said. "When you win a general excellence award, it means that everyone did a good job consistently."
Current news editor Latasha Monique was the editor-in-chief during the spring semester and gave credit to her staff for the honor.
"I'm happy with it because it was a lot of work," said Monique. "(Andrew Johansen, current Sports Editor) laid out pages real well. My overall goal was to bring diversity to the newspaper and we did it."
Among the staff members that received awards included Monique with an honorable mention for opinion writing, Adam Smith with the same honor for a sports feature photo, then Sports Editor Jose Martinez and Andrew Johansen earning a third-place plaque for inside page design and Tom Graham's feature writing class, winning second place for their article on Cindy Sheehan.
"Somebody writing for the first time, it makes it a lot easier when somebody helps you out," Johansen said of the staff and their support of one another.
