The new Vallejo center finally opened its doors on Oct. 15 to more than 1,000 students, offering 65 new sections and 20 late start classes.

The director of the new Vallejo center, Jerry Kea, says the new center is doing well as classes are filling up quickly.

"We had to turn people away," he said. "We have met and exceeded expectations."

The two-story center, at 545 Columbus Parkway, includes many amenities those attending the old campus were not accustomed to, like places to study, well-maintained bathrooms, and on cite counseling.

"This is just phase one," said Kea, "we plan on building another building."

Some other features include classrooms that are equipped with modern technology that will allow all lecture labs to connect to the World Wide Web and include up-to-date media sources often used to help reiterate classroom lectures.

Hoping to attract those wanting to enroll in college from both Vallejo and Benicia, the center was built to house 3,000 students.

William Cherry, computer programming major, likes the new center and feels "it's student friendly." However, Cherry admits that he "would like more classes to select from."

Although classes are limited now, Kea said new classes will be added to the curriculum by the spring "that will represent all eight divisions." Some of the divisions currently represented at the center include math and science, fine and applied arts, and history.

"It's a wonderfully thought-out facility," said Kea. "It's a real educational masterpiece."

American history professor Anna Geyer agrees with Kea and says that unlike the old center on the first floor in the JFK library, this center "definitely has a classroom feel," and adds, "it's a well designed room."

SCC student Ashlee Oliver said "I think the campus is nice, more that I thought it would be," and added "It's easier to come here."

Cherry agreed with Oliver and said, "It's student-friendly, I'm definitely coming here to save gas."
