"Two wins in a row possibly?" That was the main question which, after a 0-6 start, was answered by the Solano Falcons in league play.
The reality of the 49-26 blowout defeat of Contra Costa College this past Saturday was music to the entire team's ears.
"We played well against one of our rivals," said Burnsed. "Our whole offense played well. We played conservative to run the clock out."
Blake McAhren completed 17-of-39 for 361 yards in the victory at home, and threw two touchdown passes with an equal number of interceptions. This is his second straight 300 yard passing game.
Michael Hicks caught seven passes for 132 yards with one touchdown and Cedric Smith caught four balls for 90 yards with one score.
Eugene Welch caught three passes for 92 yards in the win, and running back Bryce Hawthorne scored two touchdowns, one on a 12- yard run, the other a first quarter 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Falcons defense forced seven turnovers, four interceptions for the second straight week, with three forced fumbles and allowed 12 of the 26 points during dead time in the fourth quarter. It's a major improvement from the 50 plus points per game average during the first five games of the season.
The improved defensive efforts have been one of the keys to the winning streak. Solano has scored the most points of any team in their conference, but allowed the second most points. One can only wonder and imagine what could have been if the defense had played better from the start.
"The guys up front put pressure on the quarterback," said defensive coordinator Kevin Marks. "They had protection breakdowns. We hurried the throws by rushing the quarterback."
Marks credited the good coverage that led to the turnovers up front and in the air. Both coaches credited total team efforts in the victory.
The Falcons play their final game of the year at Mendocino College in Ukiah next week, who have clinched a tie for the Bay Valley conference championship depending on the outcome of the Yuba/Contra Costa game next week.
"Their a good team," said Burnsed said of them. "We'll have to play very well."
Marks essentially echoed the comments of Burnsed.
"This will be a great challenge for us. We have a chance to knock them off the Bay/Valley Conference championship," he said.
