Only three players returned from the 2006 Solano Falcons girls volleyball team that won the Bay Valley Conference championship, but their current record in league and overall play doesn't seem to show that "inexperience factor" that tends to travel with new players.
The team (17-5 overall, 11-1 league) seems destined to make the playoffs for the second straight season after a straight sets win over Laney College in Oakland, but need to win one of their final two games, either against Yuba or Napa College, to guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs.
"We finished 13-1 (in league play) last year, so we're shooting for that again," said coach Darla Williams. "We would need to beat Napa to share the BVC (championship), but we need to beat Yuba to stay in second."
Williams credits the great play of the defense to her experienced sophomore trio of Ashley Tubb, Lovella Asuncion, and Christina Tengco.
Tubb, the "libero" of the defense, or the player that can play defense at anytime, has 263 diggs overall this season, Asuncion has 709 assists and 61 aces in the Falcons matches this season, and Tengco has 193 diggs.
"These three keep us into our defense," Williams said.
Williams said that the younger freshman have been the key to their offensive success.
"We have these great freshman players," she said. "They've improved in their hitting and writing.
Lana Berg has been one of the standout freshman players on the team, hitting .380 in league play and .315 for the season overall.
If the team earns a playoff berth, they will start play on the Nov. 20, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
