Sports fans will always know about good quarterbacks, pitchers, goalies, even great horses, but what about a libero?
The Solano Falcons girl's volleyball team has co-captain Ashley Tubb at that position. She has hit 18 aces in league play (29 overall) with a serving percentage of 93%. She has 178 diggs in league play, and 278 overall on the season. Tubb displays excellent leadership according to head coach Darla Williams, who considered her the primary passer on the team.
"She's been a great leader in the court," Williams said. "She knows how to step up the game to the level we need. She's not afraid to tell other players what to do to get the job done."
The Italian word has several definitions according to dictionary.com, but the one that bears meaning in this case is "free." The libero, according to the NCAA volleyball website, is a defensive specialist that plays in the back row, and can substitute for any player without penalty on a play.
"I've played volleyball since the fourth grade," said Tubb. "I've always been athletic and into it."
The psychology major played for Armijo High School and Club Solano before joining the Falcons. She has received offers from schools on the east coast.
