At first glance, the game may sound like a "Guitar Hero" clone, but it is much more than that. "Rock Band" is unique enough and different enough to stand out on its own.
The guitars for the game are essentially the same as the guitars in "Guitar Hero," with the controls essentially the same. The only difference, however, is that you are able to shred on the higher frets of the guitar. This added element of gameplay makes "Rock Band" stand out for its innovation.
The bass guitar controls are easier to play than the standard guitar, due to the bass having fewer buttons to play.
The drums are the most challenging part to play because it is hard to maintain a steady beat with the four drum pads and kick drum. That does not take away from the fun factor of the game.
Playing the lead singer can be either a blessing or curse. On one hand, it is fun to sing the songs. On the other, it can be embarrassing as you make a fool of yourself in front of friends. This added interaction between players helps the fun factor of the game.
The song list is quite expansive and includes The Ramones, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Clash, Nirvana, The Foo Fighters, and The Rolling Stones.
In fact, you can even download song packs from such artists as David Bowie, The Police and Metallica.
Due to this being a party game, the difficulty is not as hard so it won't frustrate gamers. While the "Guitar Hero" series may also be a party game, the difficulty of the series can frustrate and cause gamers to stop playing.
You can also play with other members of the band online, which is one of the more enjoyable aspects of the game. The only drawback to this is that you cannot hear the singer when you play other members of the band.
The graphics are decent for a next-generation game. While graphics have never been the strong suit in rhythm games, "Rock Band" does an adequate job. There is a grainy quality in the background as you play a song. It's not that distracting, but for a next-generation game you would expect better.
There really are no glaring weaknesses as the gameplay and fun factor outshine all flaws to make this a great experience.
"Rock Band" is quite possibly the best party game ever. You owe it to yourself and your friends to play this game.
