At first glance, the Solano Falcons men's basketball doesn't seem to be any good. Then you take a look at their game scores from last year.
The Falcons (9-27 overall, 6-10 conference) lost four games by one point, three games by three points, and two games in overtime. Had the team won at least half of those games, they might have reached the playoffs.
Among the returning players from last year's team include forward/guard combination Jon McCall and Gabe Sims; forwards Reggie Davis, Jared Waters and guard Dante Gordon.
Head coach John Nagle said that there is no star player on his team; rather they do their best to get the job done on the court. He said the goals this season include getting the guys developed and improving team chemistry.
"I think they play extremely hard and have great attitudes, but we just got to learn how to play together," Nagle said.
The Falcons have gotten off to a slow start this season. In pre-season play, the Falcons are 1-8 as of press time, but only two losses were by more than 10 points.
"We played an extremely competitive schedule," Nagle said. "All the teams were ranked in the top 20 (in the state) except for one."
The team is young, however. With 10 freshmen on the team this year, the youth must stand out if the team wants to get anywhere this season.
Among standout players for the Falcons this season is Davis, averaging 11.9 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game as a big presence inside the post.
Davis is the only player with double-digit scoring numbers and one of only two players to average more than five rebounds per game; the other freshman Darnell Grier averages 5.43 rebounds per game.
The success of Solano is detrimental to Davis' play this season. If he plays well, so will the team. If not, a one-point loss will be a blessing.
