Governing board members take part in the ribbon cutting for the 400 building.

All day Wednesday, Feb. 6, the Student Services building was the hub of activity on campus, students and staff buzzing with excitement as its grand opening celebration got underway.

Outdoors, nearly 75 chairs clustered around a podium for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, as landscaping work continued around the building. Inside, students scurried through the halls and offices in search of more answers to clues on their scavenger hunts, eating cookies and candy along the way.

"Traffic's been great," said Student Services vice president Lisa Waits.

By the time the inside festivities took a break so the new building's official grand opening ceremony could begin, around 100 students were on their way to completing the scavenger hunt.

Students were given a green sheet of paper with clues on the back, each one leading to one of the offices or departments within the new 400 building. Upon finding all 12 correct offices, (most of which were giving away some sort of refreshment), the participants turned their papers in for a chance to win prizes - the biggest of which were spring 2008 textbook refunds and Ipod nanos.

"Today is really all about the students," said Superintendent-President Gerry Fisher during his opening remarks at the ribbon cutting. "This building is all about the students."

The ceremony was attended by a diverse collection of people - the board of trustees, many faculty and staff members, retired board members, students, the building's architects, community members, and even a couple of elected officials.

"This building represents a shared vision," said retired board member Jim Bracy, who detailed the idea of a "one-stop" student center that has been in the works for years. Bracy applauded those who labored for so long to make SCC's plan a reality.

Everyone who spoke underscored the idea that although the new building itself is a very well-designed piece of architecture, this celebration was really about the people who played roles in its creation, who make it function, and who take advantage of its services.

Many students who took time to learn about the building during the scavenger hunt won generous prizes at a 3:30 p.m. drawing.
