Tempest staff students joined together with 550 other community college students in Los Angeles for the annual Journalism Association of Community Colleges State Convention April 3rd- 5th.
Over the three days, students participated in various activities such as workshops on video blogging, food critiquing, and making resumes. The keynote speaker of the event was Russ Stanton who is the editor of the LA Times and happens to be a former community college student. Students also took part in different competitions against one another such as watching a student film and writing a critical review.
On the last night of the conference, the winners of the competitions were announced along with awards for various news stories printed in the school papers. Our own Tempest staff was a host to a few of these awards.
Lance Park won an honorable mention for his opinion story on the California Dream Act. Peter Fournier won an honorable mention for his sports story on the season ending game for the Solano Football Team. Audrick Bituin won 4th place for his critical review of Guitar Hero 3.
"I am very proud of them," said Iris Floyd, editor-in-chief of the Tempest, "They worked so hard on their stories and I'm glad they got recognition for their work."
Mary Mazzocco, Solano journalism instructor, said "the competition is very stiff at the state level and it is often dominated by the larger southern state schools. We should be very proud of our students' awards."
