Though they finished behind Merced College in the overall meet, sophomore swimmer Todd Fahlstrom was able to qualify for the State meet with a time of 4:28.70 in the men's 400 individual medley (IM).
"Six years ago I would have never even given though to me qualifying in state so it really hasn't hit me yet," said Fahlstrom. He started playing water polo his sophomore year in high school and joined swimming the same year. "I've always been a water polo player but I've been enjoyed swimming just as much."
It seems as if the swimming is becoming more than enjoyment now.
"He's ecstatic that he got in," said swimming head coach Scott Parrish. "He worked really hard all year and he made the cut so he's one of the top swimmers in the state."
Out of thousands of Junior College athletes, only 16 are chosen to swim at their respective events.
Other than the 400 IM, Fahlstrom took second in the 200 meter butterfly and third in the 200 meter individual medley.
T.J. Friedman scored a victory in the men's 500 meter freestyle timing in at 4:57.26 and second in the 200 meter freestyle with a time of 1:47.73.
Mike Davis scored two third-place finishes in the 100 meter butterfly with a time of 57.47 and timed at 49.70 during the men's 100 meter freestyle.
Other notable men swimmers placing were Rob Howard with a second place finish in 1650 meter freestyle timed at 19:28.72, Cody Hilton scored a fourth in the 400 meter IM, and Jacob Sproule came in fourth in the 500 meter freestyle timed at 5:34.96.
Among the women swimmers, Natalie Damante scored a second in the 200 meter IM and fourth place finishes in the 500 meter freestyle and the 100 meter backstroke. Jordan Vercoe scored a second in the 100 IM with a time in 1:12.56.
"I'm very happy," Parrish said of the team this season. "They worked hard all year. They did a great job. A core group of guys and girls...everybody swam their lifetime and personal best time."
